12 Easy Hacks for Healthier Baking

They’re more than the stuff of the Newton and that figgy pudding demanded for in the Christmas carol. The fig packs more fiber and more minerals than any other domesticated fruit, including calcium, iron, and potassium. Soak 8 ounces of fresh figs in water to soften. Puree with 1/4 to 1/3 cup of water until smooth. Substitute for up to half the fat in your recipe to cut down -- or replace -- the sugar.

Summer Picnic Recipes That Aren't Sandwiches

You love picnicking? So do we, and so does Martha! Food just tastes better when eaten outdoors. A sandwich is an easy option for a quick picnic, but when you feel like something different, you'll be glad to know that there are so many other options well-suited to open-air dining. When the weather is glorious and a trip to the beach or park beckons, make a day of it by packing an outdoor-friendly meal you can linger over for hours. Whether you're looking for a recipe for a refreshing Chilled Spanish-Style Tomato Soup, a roast chicken and bread salad, or a slaws or green salad that will stay fresh until its picnic time, you'll find ideas in the slides ahead. And don't be afraid to get creative and mix-and-match your menu: Our recipes are all worth spreading out your picnic blanket for.

Have you ever thought about serving a steak for your picnic main? Flank steak is an economical cut that's full of flavor. Bonus: Our picnic-friendly Skirt Steak and Corn with Chimichurri only takes 30 minutes to make, and the steak and the corn can be cooked a day ahead and packed into separate containers. Make the chimichurri on the day of the picnic and cover it with a layer of oil to prevent this zesty herb sauce from browning. Another unexpected but entirely delicious meal option for your picnic? Make the fried chicken that's seen here and build your picnic menu around it. Our recipe creates the crispiest chicken that stays crunchy all day long, which is exactly what you need when you're packing it for a picnic.

Other foods you might not have considered picnic fare that we advocate for? Coins of grilled corn, skinny sticks of watermelon&mdashwhich are much easier to handle than a wedge&mdashand refreshing slaws. We have two favorites: You can't go wrong with either our summer slaw, made with zucchini or yellow squash, carrots, bell pepper, and sweet onion, or this addictive slaw-potato salad hybrid. Whatever way you decide to go in terms of the savory options, don't forget to pack something for a sweet ending to the meal. We think that our Walnut-Brownie Cookie is a cookie with a brownie twist that provides the best of both worlds.

While crafting a great menu is important, don't forget to think about how you'll transport and serve each dish. Maybe you're hauling a robust wheelie cooler, or maybe putting that pretty wicker picnic basket to use. Either way, be sure to pack any necessary forks, knives, spoons, cups, plates, and napkins. Now, get out the picnic basket and start packing.

Instead of killing Revenant Liu Kang, Raiden, instead does something unthinkable. He brings Liu Kang back to life within Kronika’s keep and teleports him to Raiden, combining Revenant Liu Kang, the Past Liu Kang and Himself into one being: Fire God Liu Kang.

In doing so, Liu Kang absorbed the knowledge of Kronika’s plan through his Revenant counterpart. With defeat now a possibility, Kronika speeds up her work on the hourglass as the allies make berth upon the shores of her isle. All our heroes come onto the beach, fighting the enemies of the Netherrealm together Monks, Outworld, and Earthrealm as one.

Everyone looks up to see Fire Liu Kang in the sky, and he comes down in a huge explosion that decimates much of the Netherrealm forces, then destroys the rest of them, easily getting to the front gate, which he blows open as well. As they reach the front door, Kronika is nearly ready with the hourglass. As one final stopgap measure to stall Liu Kang, she gives excess power to her three remaining lackeys.

Liu Kang reaches her chamber, and burns a hole in the metal entryway. He walks through and is greated by powerful Revenant versions of Kung Lao, Kitana, and Jade. Kronika informs him that his actions are too late, and as he rushes into battle with Kitana and Kung Lao at his side, the two reverse in their timelines, doing their previous actions backwards. We see outside that EVERYTHING is going in reverse, including the battle that just took place.

Kronika sicks the Revenants on Liu Kang, and he takes them out 3v1 like a total badass. You didn’t think you’d get away without fighting any of them though right? Kitana gets up from her ass whooping to challenge the Fire God, followed by the Revenant version of his friend Kung Lao.

After taking out the Revenants, Liu Kang begins to challenge the gods, and Cetrion comes at Liu Kang with a matched version of his elemental powers. Liu Kang informs her she’s not truly invested in this fight, not finding truth in her mother’s New Era aspirations. However, she still abides by her mother and her requests, and fight Fire God Liu Kang.

Having defeated Cetrion, Kronika demands her relinquish her powers to her. She evaporates, giving Kronika what is left of her power. Then, Kronika tells Liu Kang that he has failed, and transports him to a world before men existed in the prehistoric age, rewinding time. Your battle begins here in the New Era. After taking out Kronika the first time, she then transports Liu Kang to the dawn of time, and the start of a new era. Now with Liu Kang being immortal Kronika must defeat him for her new world to take shape. FIGHT!

After finally defeating Kronika, Fire God Liu Kang turns her into some sort of glass with his fire. (considering her ties to sand this makes sense). Suddenly behind him, Raiden appears, only now simply a man, no white eyes, no lightning powers. He informs Fire God Liu Kang he will be replacing him as the Protector of Earthrealm, giving him not only this power but also the power to the hourglass and the architecture of history. Together, they begin to shape the New Era together.

25 Classic Recipes That Everyone Should Know How to Make

Some people take food very seriously, whether they’re cooking or eating it, and I happen to be one of them (more on the eating than cooking side, though). And it’s not just the quality, process, and taste that matters: Many believe—half-seriously, I assume—that certain recipes have life-altering powers, from Glamour’s famed “Engagement Chicken” to Refinery29’s recent “Come Fuck Me Penne a la Vodka.” Silly cooking lore aside, I do think there are some recipes that everyone should know (or try to learn) how to make.
